Air filter placement in a typical Central Alabama home falls into one of three buckets: (1) a wall or hallway return you can reach standing on the floor — easy, DIY it. (2) An attic-mounted air handler with the filter in a ceiling grille or on the return plenum — dangerous. (3) A crawlspace air handler with the filter under the house — miserable. Buckets 2 and 3 are what we handle.
Attic filter changes look easy in a YouTube video and go sideways fast in an actual Alabama attic. Real conditions: 120 to 140 degrees in the summer, loose blown-in insulation covering the joists, a rafter framework with no continuous flat surface, an attic pull-down ladder that was not built to hold a person carrying a filter and a phone flashlight, and a return plenum that is often awkwardly bolted or held on with sheet-metal screws. Homeowners fall through ceilings every year doing this. We show up with proper PPE, a real ladder, and the right filter.
Crawlspace filter changes are the other version of the same problem. Tight vertical clearance (24 to 30 inches is common in older Birmingham homes), damp Alabama subsoil, spiders and the occasional snake, and a filter slot that has been undisturbed since the house was built. We do this every week — you should not have to.
Included in the $75 flat rate: A standard 1-inch pleated MERV 8 filter in the common Central Alabama residential sizes, which we stock on the truck.
Upgrade to a higher-MERV filter: MERV 11 or MERV 13 (for allergies, pets, or wildfire smoke season) — no extra labor charge, filter cost pass-through only ($8 to $15 depending on size).
4-inch and 5-inch media cabinets (Aprilaire, Honeywell, Trane whole-house media): Call for a walkthrough quote — media-cabinet filters vary widely in retail cost, and we quote per-visit rather than posting a fixed upcharge online.
Bring your own filter: No problem. Have it ready when we arrive and we will install it. Price stays $75 flat.
Not covered: Electronic Air Cleaners (EAC), UV lamps, HEPA replacement cartridges. Those are their own service — call for a quote.

Our flat rate is $75 per filter for hard-to-reach filter replacements — filters located in the attic, crawlspace, or under-home returns. How often should I change the filter in my attic or crawlspace?
For most Central Alabama homes, every 90 days is the sweet spot for a 1-inch pleated filter. If you have shedding pets, indoor smokers, or run construction dust through the system, drop that to every 60 days. Media-cabinet filters (4-inch or 5-inch) can go 6 to 12 months. If the filter is somewhere you cannot safely reach, we handle it on a set schedule you pick.
Do you supply the filter, or do I need to buy one?
We supply the filter at no extra charge as part of the $75 flat rate. If you prefer a specific brand or a higher-MERV filter, tell us the size and MERV rating when you book and we will bring it. Bring-your-own is also fine and does not change the price.
Do you service homes outside of Birmingham?
Yes. Home filter change is available across all of Central Alabama including Gardendale, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Trussville, Pelham, Alabaster, Helena, Fultondale, Pinson, Center Point, Irondale, Leeds, and Chelsea. If you are outside our normal service radius, call us — we can usually add you to a route within the week.
Why call a service instead of doing it myself?
Attic-mounted and under-home filter returns are a real safety issue. Attic access means loose insulation, rafters, hot summer temperatures over 120 degrees, and no flat surface to stand on. Under-home crawlspaces mean tight clearances, spiders, moisture, and awkward angles. We do this every day with proper PPE and ladders — you skip the fiberglass in your arms and the trip to the ER.
