How the CAP500-UV Works
The unit is mounted directly above your evaporator coil inside the air handler cabinet. Its 1,950 μw/cm² UV-C lamp continuously irradiates the coil surface and every cubic foot of air that passes over it. Microorganisms exposed to that level of UV-C energy at the 254 nm germicidal wavelength cannot reproduce, so the biological load on the coil drops sharply and stays down as long as the lamp is working.
The unit is ozone-free. It does not introduce any chemicals or byproducts into your indoor air.
A built-in status indicator tells you at a glance whether the lamp is still working:
- Green, operating within acceptable range
- Yellow, output declining, schedule replacement
- Red, lamp inoperable, replace immediately
An audible chirp alarm also triggers when the indicator hits yellow, so you don’t have to check it manually.

What This Does NOT Do
We prefer to be direct about the limits of the technology:
- It is not a substitute for regular air duct cleaning. UV kills microbes on the coil surface and in the airstream, but it does not remove existing dust, debris, or historic buildup already inside your ductwork. For that, we recommend a full duct clean.
- It does not filter out particles. UV energy does not trap pollen, dust, or smoke, that’s the job of your air filter. Continue using a quality MERV-rated filter appropriate for your system.
- It is not a medical device. We do not make claims about treating or preventing any illness.
- Direct exposure to UV-C light is not safe for eyes or skin. The lamp is fully enclosed inside the air handler cabinet during operation, which is why it’s safe as installed, but the lamp should not be operated outside the cabinet or during service.

How long does the install take?
Typically under an hour on a standard residential air handler. Longer if we need to run new power or work around a difficult cabinet layout.
Does the CAP500-UV produce ozone?
No. The CAP500-UV lamp is a germicidal UV-C lamp only, no ozone output. (Abatement Technologies also makes a “-UVP” ozone-producing version for severe odor problems; that’s a different product.)
Do I still need to clean my ducts?
Yes. UV kills what’s growing on the coil and in the airstream going forward, it doesn’t remove what’s already accumulated in your ductwork. Most homeowners install UV after a full duct clean, not instead of one.
How often does the lamp need to be replaced?
Manufacturer specifies replacement every ~9,000 hours of operation, which is roughly once a year for typical homes. The built-in indicator handles the timing, you don’t have to track hours.
Will this raise my electric bill?
The unit runs on a standard 120 V outlet and draws roughly the same power as a compact fluorescent bulb. Peer-reviewed field research on UV-C coil treatment has documented small net HVAC energy savings (about 4.5% in mixed studies) because a cleaner coil transfers heat more efficiently.
What if the unit fails?
