Dryer Takes Two Cycles to Dry in Birmingham, AL

If your dryer suddenly needs two full cycles to dry a normal load — or three cycles for towels and jeans — the problem almost always lives in the vent line, not the dryer itself. In Central Alabama humidity, a partially blocked vent forces the dryer to work twice as hard, wastes energy, and creates the exact hot-lint conditions the U.S. Fire Administration lists as the leading factor in residential dryer fires.

Here is how to diagnose it, what you can safely check yourself, and when to stop using the dryer entirely.

Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

1. Lint-clogged vent run. Roughly nine out of ten “two-cycle” calls we get in the Birmingham metro are a partially blocked vent between the dryer and the exterior hood. The dryer cannot expel moist air fast enough, so a load stays damp.
2. Crushed or kinked transition hose. The 4-inch flexible hose between the dryer and the wall gets pinched when the appliance is pushed too close to the wall.
3. Bird nest or debris in the exterior hood. Very common in Central Alabama spring and summer. A single sparrow nest can cut airflow by more than half.
4. Damaged or partially disconnected vent inside the wall or attic. Older Birmingham homes with foil flex sometimes sag and pool lint at low spots.
5. Vent run too long or non-compliant. Alabama uses the 2021 IMC. IMC 504 limits total developed length; too many elbows or a very long run makes symptoms worse over time.
6. Actual dryer failure (heating element or thermal fuse). Real, but rare compared to the airflow issues above. We usually rule out the vent first, because it is cheaper and fixes the problem 90%+ of the time.

Quick DIY Checks Before You Call

• Disconnect the dryer and look at the transition hose. If it is packed with lint, that alone can double your drying time.
• Go outside and watch the exterior vent hood while a load runs. You should see the flap open with strong warm airflow. Weak, cool, or no airflow = blocked run.
• Check the exterior hood screen (if any) for a bird nest, mesh clogged with lint, or a stuck flap.
• Run a load on a timed heat cycle instead of “auto sensor.” If the load still is damp, the vent is almost certainly the issue.
• Feel the top of the dryer. If it is very hot to the touch after a normal cycle, that is airflow restriction.

When To Stop Using The Dryer

Do not run another load if you observe any of these:

• Burning or hot-lint smell during or after a cycle.
• Visible scorching or discoloration on the transition hose or the back of the dryer.
• The dryer trips a thermal fuse or shuts itself off mid-cycle.
• You can see or smell smoke, however faint.
